Medical technologies at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute

This event has already taken place.

Wednesday 26 November 2014

Professor Christopher Perera, Dean College of Engineering & Science, invites you to the Dean's lecture being delivered by Professor Martyn Nash from University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Researchers in Auckland are developing a variety of medical technologies that use model-based interpretation of biological measurements to assist clinicians with the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.

This seminar will illustrate this bioengineering approach by drawing upon specific examples involving:

  • heart failure mechanics
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • breast cancer imaging.

About the speaker

Professor Nash’s research career has been focused on Bioengineering analyses of the heart in order to understand mechanisms and events underlying cardiac electro-mechanical activity.

His PhD involved computational modelling and imaging of cardiac mechanics. Subsequently (as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oxford from 1997-2002) he established experimental and clinical research programmes to study the electrophysiological function and dysfunction of the heart.

Professor Nash also developed new bioengineering research themes applying his modelling and analysis expertise to other organ systems - specifically studying bio-mechanics of the breast, skin, pelvic floor, lungs, tongue, head (shaken baby syndrome) and equine hoof.

Application of his research

This continual interplay between biological observation, instrumentation and mathematical modelling provides mechanistic insight into physiological function.

He strives to apply this research to facilitate:

  • the development of improved medical imaging, biomedical devices and diagnostic techniques, and
  • the elucidation of possible therapeutic targets for prevention and treatment of disease.
