This unit provides the opportunity to put into practice educational research proposals, carry out additional evidence-based evaluation or develop a further specialist area building on work completed in AET4003 - Improving Practice.

Please note this unit will not be available in 2020.

Unit details

The process will involve data collection from multiple data sources (including students), data analysis and interpretation and the writing of a final report that might contribute to building a research track record, including forming the basis of a refereed publication.

The unit is delivered via a combination of face-to-face workshops and online engagement.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students are expected to be able to:

  • carry out a thorough and systematic literature review on a well-defined topic related to tertiary education practice
  • use common education research and/or evaluation methods to design and carry out a study within ethical and practical constraints
  • synthesise literature, data and experience in the interpretation of findings
  • develop concise and clearly structured reports on research findings
  • identify and make recommendations for further research and evaluation activities.

Presentation A mid-semester class presentation reporting on progress of investigation, highlighting issues encountered and resolutions sought. 20%
Research paper Detailed report on the investigation and evaluation of an issue related to tertiary education 80%

The intention of the research activity and report is for students to develop practical and ethically-sound approaches to the conduct of their investigations. Students who choose to conduct research with students, rather than theoretical or secondary data analysis, will be required to gain prior approval from the Ethics Committee.
