VU’s approach to the transition and teach out process for the cessation of higher education courses and majors for domestic students and international onshore students is guided by TEQSA’s compliance requirements and on relevant VU policy for higher education courses.
Course cessation & student transition
Below is a brief description of the processes for ceasing a course or major. This information can be found in more detail in the Courses lifecycle course cessation and student transition procedure.
There are two stages to ceasing to offer a course or major:
- Course cessation proposal
- Student transition and teach out plan.
It is only after the last student has completed the course or major that it is deactivated in the course approvals and management system.
Process
Course cessation proposal
The College/Course team must prepare Proposal A: Course cessation proposal that address the following:
- implications caused by the decision to teach out/ transition, such as: impact on existing pathways and impact on other courses
- implications for governance and management processes, and contractual partners/ professional accreditation bodies
- evidence of consultation with internal and external stakeholders (including College/s, VU International)
- the final commencing intake and date when course will complete the teach out period.
This document requires endorsement by the Dean of the relevant College/s and Vice President VU International before approval by the Provost.
This approval signals the College to complete Template A: Student transition & teach out plan.
Student transition & teach out plan
If the course has currently enrolled or pending students a Student transition & teach out plan will need to be actioned. This includes details such as:
- principles upon which transitions will be carried out
- course/unit and individual student mapping to new course structure/units (domestic and international onshore)
- course delivery mapping
- communications strategy
- maintenance of teaching and learning quality.
Once complete, this document requires endorsement by the Dean of the relevant College/s and Vice President VU International before approval by the Provost.
Both documents are uploaded to CAMS and are submitted to Courses Committee and Academic Board for noting.
