Block model testimonial with Dr Tim Law

What were your initial perceptions about block?

Dr Tim Law

Dr Tim Law

My initial perceptions initially was that when I was starting block mode it will be like traditional just done more frequently. What I discovered was that it was actually a rethink from the ground up in that you had to redesign the entire unit so that it was suitable for delivery without too much work in between classes, because honestly the students don't get a lot of time on their own between classes. So yes my initial expectation and the actual was quite different.

Did your perceptions change?

Dr Tim Law

My initial perception of block mode was that it was really great in that we could just start the lesson without have students having to be re-inducted one week later and that has held true. Students really appreciate being able to focus on one subject at the time. But the other aspect of block mode was that I thought I would be able to engage the class quite effectively, that turned out to be a bit of a challenge. You see in a big classroom, there is always a core group of a few students that will be asking questions and they will be interacting and be engaged and that delivers enough momentum to the class to continue. In block delivery when the classes are too small sometimes you don't get enough of a core group to get the engagement happening.
