Opening doors through industry partnerships
Business partner, People, Culture and Improvement
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
"My name is Amanda Wilson. I'm a business partner at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in the People, Culture and Improvement team. I also studied a graduate diploma at VU in human resources and industrial relations.
"The Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre hosts over a thousand events a year. We employ almost a thousand people now and we contribute just over $1 billion per annum to the Victorian Visitor Economy. So in terms of contribution, we're a big player.
"I think the things that we've really enjoyed with VU is the way that they tailor their courses. So we're really looking for that best of breed. And this is sort of why we're excited about partnering with VU to actually have some industry input into, or at least support of the curriculum.
"We find the students are really well prepared, they're dedicated. The research factor for VU is really important too. And I really like what they're doing with that space so that the students have actually got quite a broad knowledge of the visitor economy when they come in.
"I think that the beauty of the VU programme is it's a combination of practical and theoretical, so certainly anything from their polytechnic right through to their actual school in terms of the degrees that they offer. I also think that a lot of the study they have is quite business-based, so it's quite broad and that's actually been hugely supportive of the students having a really good grounded knowledge when they come in."
