Jen Anderson

Senior Coordinator, Accessibility Services

Hi, my name is Jen and I coordinate Accessibility Services at VU.

Together with the [Accessibility Services] team, we deliver services for students whose learning is impacted by a health condition or disability. We work with academic and professional staff across the University to support many students in their learning and success.

Our services are designed to minimise the impact of a disability or illness on learning and include:

  • Arranging alternate format course materials for students with a vision impairment [or other print disability]
  • We also arrange Auslan interpreters for Deaf students and closed captions for video resources on VU Collaborate
  • We have a team of Academic Support Workers who support students in class and on placements.

We can also help with hiring equipment and acquiring assistive software to help students to learn and study. We work with Colleges and the Assessments Unit to make sure Alternative Assessment Arrangements are in place.

We also assist students to take advantage of the 'out of classes' activities that are organised by Student Life and the Victoria University Student Union.

When we meet you, we work with you to assess the adjustments you need to succeed. We summarise these in a document known as an Access Plan. It is a great idea to send your electronic Plan to your teacher early in every Block study period.

An Access Plan is a document that is produced by an Accessibility Liaison Officer with you as a registered student. It summarises the following:

  • Recommendations for teaching adjustments.
  • Assessment and examination adjustments.
  • Placement support (if required).
  • The impacts of your health condition or disability on your learning.
  • Your responsibilities.
  • Referrals for learning support and other factors for independent learning.

As Academic Liaison Officers we will often recommend you visit other areas and services who assist all students at VU. The Learning Hub is a popular referral point where you can polish your writing, maths and other skills expected of VU graduates. Referrals are important and these are included in the Access Plan for easy reference.

If you have an illness or a disability and you would like to learn more about the services we provide – please contact us!
