Student Leadership Awards application form

These non-academic awards recognise and celebrate students across Victoria University. If you play a significant leadership role and improve the quality of the student experience within or beyond Victoria University, then apply for an award!

The judging panel members are appointed from a diverse range of expertise and organisations. Successful candidates will be awarded in a formal ceremony and cash prizes will be given!

Part A: Award categories

In 2017, the Student Leadership Awards include 12 categories.

Individual Award

This award recognises students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication to engagement activities at Victoria University.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students (see eligibility).

Up to five awards granted in the Individual Award category.

Selection criteria for Individual Awards

Applications for the Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your student leadership activities.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your leadership activities demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

VU Spirit Individual Award

This award recognises students who have gone above and beyond in their leadership and engagement activities at Victoria University, showing true VU Spirit.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students (see eligibility). One VU Spirit Individual award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for VU Spirit Individual Award

Applications for the VU Spirit Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your volunteer student leadership activities.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your leadership activities demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

Students as Staff Individual Award

This award recognises Students as Staff (SAS) for their outstanding service or work performance to the University.

This award is open to all currently employed VU Students as Staff. One Students as Staff individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for Students as Staff Individual Award

Applications for the Students as Staff Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your role within VU as a Student as Staff.
  • Describe how your role within VU has made a significant contribution to the University.
  • Describe situations where you have contributed to positive change through your role as a Student as Staff.
  • Describe how your work performance demonstrates the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

Clubs Individual Award

This award recognises the outstanding contribution to the VU community of a current VU student who is part of a VU Student Life affiliated club or VUSU College Society.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students who are part of at least one Student Life affiliated club or VUSU College Society. One Clubs Individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for Clubs Individual Award

Applications for the Clubs Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe the club or society you are a part of, including the activities of the club or society.
  • Describe how your contributions through your club or society have made a difference to the University.
  • Describe how your club or society activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your contribution to the club or society demonstrates the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

Indigenous Individual Award

This award recognises a current Indigenous Victoria University student who actively contributes to the development of the Victoria University community.

This award is open to all currently enrolled Indigenous students. One Indigenous Individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for Indigenous Individual Award

  • Describe your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander family and/or community connections.
  • Describe how your volunteer or leadership activities have made a contribution to improving the quality of the student experience or the experience of the Aboriginal community within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your volunteer or leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your leadership activities demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

International Individual Award

This award recognises a current International Victoria University student who demonstrates outstanding leadership and dedication to engagement activities at Victoria University.

This award is open to currently enrolled International Students. One International Individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for the International Individual Award

Applications for the International Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your volunteer student leadership activities.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have resulted in learning and development opportunities for you and others.

Postgraduate Individual Award

This award recognises the outstanding contribution of a current VU postgraduate student to the VU community. This student embodies the essence of what it means to be a postgraduate student at Victoria University.

This award is open to currently enrolled postgraduate students. One Postgraduate Individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for Postgraduate Individual Award

Applications for the Postgraduate Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your volunteer student leadership activities.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have resulted in learning and development opportunities for you and others.

Victoria Polytechnic Individual Award

This award recognises outstanding leadership in academic, co-curricular and/or extracurricular activities and involvements of a Victoria Polytechnic student.

This award is open to currently enrolled Victoria Polytechnic students. One Victoria Polytechnic Individual Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for the Victoria Polytechnic Individual Award

Applications for the Victoria Polytechnic Individual Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your volunteer student leadership activities.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your leadership activities demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

Clubs Team Award

This award recognises the outstanding contribution to the VU community of a current group of students who are part of a Student Life affiliated club or VUSU College Society.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students who are part of at least one Student Life affiliated club or VUSU College Society. One Clubs Team Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for Clubs Team Award

Applications for the Clubs Team Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe the club or society you are a part of, including the activities of the club or society.
  • Describe how the contributions of your club or society have made a difference to the University.
  • Describe how the leadership activities of your club or society have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how the contributions of your club or society demonstrates the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation

VU Spirit Team Award

This award recognises a group of current Victoria University students for going above and beyond in their contribution and engagement to Victoria University.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students (see eligibility). One VU Spirit Team Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for VU Spirit Team Award

Applications for the VU Spirit Team Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe the student leadership activities of your team.
  • Describe how your team’s leadership activities have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of the student experience within and/or beyond VU.
  • Describe how your team’s leadership activities have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your team’s leadership activities demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

VU Innovation Team Award

This award recognises a group of current Victoria University students for their innovative contribution to and engagement with VU.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students (see eligibility). One VU Innovation Team Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for the VU Innovation Team Award

Applications for the VU Innovation Team Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe your team's innovative activities and their purpose.
  • Describe how your team's contributions have made a difference to the University.
  • Describe how your team's developments have resulted in learning for your team and/or others.
  • Describe how your team's contributions demonstrate the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

VU in the Community Team Award

This award recognises a group of current Victoria University students for their contribution to and engagement with the greater Victoria University community.

This award is open to all currently enrolled students (see eligibility). One VU in the Community Team Award will be presented each year.

Selection criteria for the VU in the Community Team Award

Applications for the VU in the Community Team Award must address all four of the following criteria:

  • Describe the community organisation/s your team is a part of, including the activities of the organisation/s.
  • Describe how your team's contributions in the community have made a difference to the University.
  • Describe how the volunteer activities of your team have inspired or encouraged personal and/or professional development in others.
  • Describe how your team's contribution to the community demonstrates the core values of VU: engagement, collegiality, innovation.

Before you apply

The online form doesn't allow you to save your application before you submit it, so please make sure you have prepared the following:

  • name, student ID, email and mobile number of each team member (if applying for a team award)
  • contact details for two referees (or one if applying for the Victoria Polytechnic Individual Award)
  • signed letter/s and document/s supporting your application from each of your referees
  • supporting materials relevant to your application, all collated into one file.

Nominations close 5pm, Thursday 24 August 2017. Any applications submitted after this time will not be reviewed by the panel.

You are required to submit two reference letters from professional or academic referees. The referees listed below should be the people who write your reference letters.
