Gaye Hamilton is one of five Government appointed members of the University Council. She has been a council member since 2012, and was appointed Deputy Chancellor in 2017. In the second half of 2020 she was the Chancellor during a period of transition, after which she continued as Deputy Chancellor in 2021. 

Gaye started her professional career with 18 years of secondary science, maths and biology teaching in the Victorian State Schools system, reaching the Principal class prior to resigning and changing careers in 1989.

She commenced transformation roles as Assistant Director at Melbourne Zoo and then Director of Werribee’s Open Range Zoo before moving to Scienceworks as Director in 1996. In 2002, Gaye became Director of Museum Operations with Museum Victoria, responsible for Scienceworks, Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum and the Royal Exhibition Building, the position that she retired from at the end of 2004.

She now undertakes a range of contract and consultancy work and is currently the Chair of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Community Foundation and on the board of Western Chances. 

In November 2021, Gaye was awarded the Victoria Senior Australian of the Year.
