Teaching about human biology - taking a systems approach

This event has already taken place.

Wednesday 10 May 2017

Professor Orit Ben-Zvi Assaraf, from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel is presenting this seminar on teaching about human biology - taking a systems approach.

This seminar is brought to you by the College of Arts & Education and the Academic Support Development Unit. It is part of the 2017 College of Arts & Education Lunchtime & Twilight Seminar series.

We invite teachers, researchers, masters students and anyone else interested to join us for the seminar.

Profesor Assaraf's study offers several principles for overcoming the challenge of teaching students complex systems such as human biology:

  • present the human body within a framework that addresses, expresses and organises all of the system's components and relationship between them
  • give students a means of externalising and examining their own mental system models
  • give students guidance in using system language and drawing connections between various aspects of the system
  • teachers should be provided with learning materials that reinforce connections between the system's different organisational levels and the human body's sub-systems.
