Submitting your thesis for classification
You must submit your thesis for classification within 12 months of the date on the Letter of Recommendation received with your thesis examination reports. The following documents must be forwarded to the Chair of Examiners with your application:
- A copy of the revised thesis (spiral bound)
- Recommendation on Classification of Thesis form for signing by the Chair of Examiners and Associate Dean Research & Research Training in your Faculty
- supporting letter from your principal supervisor to the Chair of Examiners confirming all required changes have been made to their satisfaction. If the thesis was submitted for re-examination the letter should also outline substantive changes.
- citation (maximum 60 words) written by your principal supervisor outlining the problem investigated, research outcomes, impact on the community/industry, publications, awards/recognition received and whether you are currently employed by VU. This citation will be read at your graduation ceremony.
- a Summary of Responses to Examiners addressing each examiner's report. This must include reference to changes in the amended thesis (not necessary if your thesis is passed without correction by all examiners)
- copy of all examiners reports, including the initial reports where the thesis is submitted for re-examination
-
if the thesis contains intellectual property that needs to be protected you should also submit a Restricted Access to Thesis form together with supporting documents from your Principal Supervisor and Chair of Examiners. Access to your thesis can be restricted for up to 2 years.
The Chair of Examiners will review your application in accordance with the Guidelines for Chairs of Examiners.
Review of your application for classification
The Working Party of the Postgraduate Research Committee will review your application and, where appropriate, recommend to the Postgraduate Research Committee that your thesis be classified as ‘passed’. The Office for Postgraduate Research will then notify the Education and Research Board that you have satisfied the requirements for award of the degree. The Education and Research Board will thereafter classify the thesis as passed and will notify Council of classifications approved.
Students wishing to graduate in June 2012 must submit their classification paperwork by 16th March 2012.
Notification and submission of bound copies of your thesis
The Office for Postgraduate Research will notify you in writing of the working party's recommendation. You will also be asked to submit two bound copies and one electronic copy of your thesis to the Office for Postgraduate Research within 2 months of receiving this notification.
Completion and graduation
Once you have submitted copies of your thesis and the Education and Research Board have classified your thesis as 'passed', you will receive a Letter of Completion and can apply to graduate!
