Research in exercise science
Advancements in the health and wellbeing of communities and the development of new technologies often depends on people participating in quality research.
All research at VU involving people is designed, conducted and reported in manner that protects the rights of research participants. The VU Human Research Ethics Committee approves and reviews research involving people to ensure the values and principles in the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) are maintained.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from people willing to volunteer to participate in research that has real benefits for the community.
We are conducting a clinical study on the effects of ageing on muscle strength, metabolism, aerobic fitness and quality of life. We will also investigate whether muscle function can predict falls in people aged between 65-80 years.
We are seeking healthy volunteers aged 65-80 years. You must be free from knee problems but may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure or high glucose levels. Volunteers need to attend VU Footscray Park Campus twice. The first visit is to assess your fitness and muscle strength, and the second is to undergo a resting muscle biopsy.
This study is a collaboration between the VU Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL) and the Musculoskeletal Research Centre at La-Trobe University and Warringal Hospital.
