Our research focuses mainly on the scholarship of teaching and learning.  Research is undertaken:

  • by our Higher Education, TAFE and professional staff and by visiting researchers
  • in collaboration with students, staff in other Victoria University faculties and other organisations
  • as part of the work of Victoria University College Communities of Practice

Our research is integrated with teaching and learning projects and practice, professional development of our teaching staff, academic workshops, College-wide collaboration, conference presentations and key academic publications. 

It supports commercial applications, partnerships with industry and community and embedding applied research into innovative teaching and learning practice.

Research interests

Our key focus is on:

  • evaluation methodologies in Students Supporting Student Learning (SSSL) models/implementation
  • international and transnational education
  • social networking, Web 2.0 and peer mentoring in student learning support
  • learning in the workplace and community, and graduate employability skills
  • student transition, retention and academic pathways infrastructure

Examples of Victoria University College research

Highlighted research projects:

  • Victoria University College teaching staff are working on a range of research projects with Chinese partner universities. Projects include improving language learner support materials, promoting English through public speaking, and evaluating interactive teaching methods.
  • Student mentoring research papers and projects, including ‘Student Mentors in Physical and Virtual Learning Spaces’, by Keith Kirkwood, Gill Best, Rob McCormack and Dan Tout, in the 2011 academic text ‘Physical and Virtual Learning Spaces in Higher Education’
  • An analysis of work integrated learning (WIL), ‘Working on Campus: Simulation, “Half-way House” or Genuine WIL?’, was presented by Fiona Henderson at the ACEN 2010 National Conference
  • Collaboration in developing a print and interactive DVD guide for academics, ‘Finding Common Ground: enhancing interaction between domestic and international students’
  • Dr Rob McCormack is investigating the innovative applications of vodcasting and visualisation learning technologies in dramatising academic thought processes
  • A model for implementing and analysing the Australian Core Skills framework in curriculum, assessment and learning design is being developed by Phil Moore
  • ELI, spearheaded by Jeanette Scott, is trialling a learner-centred online platform enabling interactive learning and a customisable database of support materials to scaffold independent learning skills and enhance student outcomes
  • Natalie Williams, Bill Daly, Luo Ying and Qi Lantao co-ordinated an analysis into predictors of student success in the Diploma of Business with four partner universities in China
