Centre for Ageing, Rehabilitation, Exercise and Sport Science (CARES)
In this section
The Centre for Ageing, Rehabilitation, Exercise and Sport (CARES) is housed in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development.
We conduct multidisciplinary research that focuses on understanding, maintaining and improving human health and function across human life span. This means we work with children, young and older adults, and the aged, as well as healthy individuals and those with disabilities, illness and disease. Although focused on Melbourne's west, we are committed to enhancing the health and wellbeing of all Australians through our research.

Our researchers
CARES comprises a large number of academic associates from across the University, predominantly from the School of Sport and Exercise Science, and the School of Biomedical and Health Sciences. We also employ a number of postdoctoral research fellows and we're committed to fostering postgraduate student research. Our associates currently supervise around 60 PhD and masters by research students.
Research partners
We have a strong emphasis on basic research, as well as research through engagement with industry, government and the community. We have an extensive network of collaborators from other Australian and international universities, as well as strong clinical connections and research links in elite sport, including our 'Sports Triangle' partners. Our research partners include:
- Western Bulldogs Football Club
- Maribyrnong College
- Australian Institute of Sport
- local councils in western Melbourne
- hospitals and health organisations in Melbourne and overseas
- Victorian Government-funded research projects
Research facilities
Our associates, staff and postgraduate research students have ready access to excellent research facilities. These facilities are currently undergoing major redevelopment, including the establishment of world-class laboratories in a $68 million building located at the Footscray Park Campus, due for completion in 2010.
