Welcome to the GLU newsletter, VU Vibe

VU Vice-Chancellor Elizabeth Harman
Welcome to the second edition of VU Vibe, the newsletter of the University’s Government Liaison Unit. As Orientation activities wind down and students prepare for the start of classes the dominant theme in this issue is our core business of education.
This edition includes items on our strong enrolments and on the $12.4 million upgrade of teaching facilities across two of our campuses. We also profile animal technician teacher Greg Gordon, whose work in mentoring and course development earned him a Vice-Chancellor’s Award last year.
In vocational education, we cover the opportunities provided by the Recognition of Prior Learning program. Last year VU completed a highly successful skills audit of Australian Taxation Office staff and subsequently awarded qualifications to eligible staff.
This year the University will be refining its education strategy to address the opportunities and challenges that are emerging in the increasingly deregulated and competitive marketplace. The State Government’s contestable framework for vocational and further education has opened up delivery of education in the TAFE sector, and Federal Government initiatives will enhance student choices. These changes, coupled with strong population growth in our catchment of western Melbourne, mean that VU must ensure our courses are strongly aligned with industry and community needs and that we continue to enhance the quality of our courses and service delivery.
Finally, I want to welcome our new Chancellor, Melbourne business leader George Pappas, who we profile in this edition. VU is fortunate to have someone of Mr Pappas’ calibre on board as chair of the University Council. I look forward to working with the Chancellor in 2010 as we steer VU to an even stronger position as the leading education provider in our dynamic and growing region.
