Strong enrolments forecast for 2010

Mon 1 March 2010

The University’s enrolments are looking very strong this year. Although official data will not be available until after the initial Semester 1 census on 31 March, indications are that we will meet our target of 108 per cent of Commonwealth funding for places in higher education.

This year, all universities have been permitted to over-enrol by up to 10 per cent by the Commonwealth Government, which means that we can take on additional funded places.

Each year, VU makes direct offers to students and also participates in the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) process to enrol students. VTAC is primarily used by applicants for higher education courses and full-time TAFE courses at or above Certificate IV level. VTAC accounts for less than 20 per cent of TAFE intake overall.

In terms of achieving our overall student load targets, the estimated commencing target of 4505 Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (EFTSL) is currently being exceeded by actual enrolments of 5628.9 EFTSL (approximately 125 per cent of target load). More specifically, our three Higher Education Faculties are currently enrolled at the following rates compared with their targets:

  • Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development:       139%
  • Faculty of Business and Law:                                                104%
  • Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science:                       126%

Each year, there is a substantial reduction between the load reported at the start of first semester, and the final census date figures at 31 August. On the figures available to us now, the University can predict that the final census outcomes will be close to the overall 108 per cent target. The Faculty of Business and Law has the capacity to undertake a mid-year enrolment round, which will boost its student load.

TAFE performance relies much less heavily on VTAC intakes, and enrols students throughout the year. Only about one-fifth of TAFE enrolments occur through the VTAC process. The current level of intake is comparable to that recorded last year, and expectations are that the vocational targets will be met. More meaningful data against the TAFE targets will be available later in the year.
