New classrooms wired for high-tech delivery

Mon 1 March 2010

A $12.4 million upgrade of teaching spaces will provide extra classroom capacity at two of the University’s largest campuses – St Albans and Footscray Park.

The high-tech refurbishments will provide seating for an additional 610 students in learning environments equipped with the latest audio-visual technology.

Three projects funded largely by the Commonwealth Government’s Teaching and Learning Capital Fund with a small contribution from the University will entail:

  • A new 350-seat lecture theatre adjacent to the existing auditorium on the St Albans Campus for use by education, nursing and paramedic students
  • Refurbishment of the existing auditorium at St Albans to include a 280-seat lecture theatre,  two new flexible learning spaces, six new tutorial rooms and staff accommodation
  • A Professional Development Room simulating an office environment for final year students in the Faculty of Business and Law on the lower level of Building P at the Footscray Park Campus
  • A flexible collaborative learning room, two case study rooms and three tutorial rooms in the same Footscray Park space, all with high-quality audio-visual equipment
  • Upgrades of existing classrooms across the Footscray Park Campus to include interactive whiteboards, document cameras, data projectors and flexible chairs and desks

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Management and Capital Services Jon Hickman said the aim of the upgrade was twofold: to meet the increasing demand for teaching, nursing and paramedics places and to provide leading edge educational facilities incorporating the latest technology.

“The modern university teaching space has come a long way in the past few decades to keep pace with the technology that is being incorporated into learning at every level,” Mr Hickman said.

“Students will have access to captured notes, images, spoken words and demonstrations easily and quickly, at a time and place of their choosing with the aid of the IT and audio-visual technology we are now installing.”

Work commences this month and will be rolled out from July this year to March 2011.
