Green spot: Marsha Thomson to launch Footscray bike hub

Mon 1 March 2010

State MP for Footscray and Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Marsha Thomson will join VU staff and students tomorrow (Tuesday 2 March) to launch a new bike hub at the Footscray Nicholson Campus.

The hub is part of the University’s commitment to sustainable transport and has been installed to encourage more students and staff to cycle to the campus.

Funded by the Victorian Government under a partnership program, the bicycle facility will include parking spots for up to 41 bikes in a secure lock-up area with shower facilities and lockers.

A second bike hub is being installed in the new Sport and Learning Precinct under construction at the Footscray Park Campus and is due to open later this year.

The two projects are funded by a $166,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Local Access Area Program.

VU aims to increase the numbers of staff and students cycling or walking to work by 5 per cent each year. Currently 4 per cent of students and 5 per cent of staff cycle to the Footscray Nicholson Campus.

VU Sustainability Officer Anne McLean said the bike hub will provide staff and students with a secure facility to park their bicycle during the day and will overcome impediments associated with cycling to the campus, such as being hot and sweaty on arrival or the dreaded ‘helmet hair’ syndrome.
