Two young College of Health & Biomedicine researchers have been invited to the most prestigious meeting of scientists from across the Commonwealth.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dr Ahmed Rahman and PhD research student Ms Lauren Cornall have been selected by the Royal Society in London to participate in November’s Commonwealth Science Conference in Bangalore, India.
The celebration of excellence in Commonwealth science will allow delegates from 40 countries to build networks for cooperative research, share new insights and build scientific capacity in developing nations within the Commonwealth. Also supported by the Indian government, it will be the first Commonwealth Science Conference for nearly 50 years.
The Royal Society selected 15 outstanding Post-Doctoral researchers and 15 outstanding PhD researchers from across Australia to participate, with Victoria University's nominees for both categories being successful.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Warren Payne congratulated both researchers on their tremendous achievement.
“Lauren and Ahmed will benefit enormously from their attendance and will make excellent ambassadors for Victoria University,” Professor Payne said. “I would also like to thank Ahmed and Lauren’s supervisors, Dr Kulmira Nurgali and Dr Andrew McAinch respectively, and the Office for Research for their support.”
Dr Rahman’s research has revealed how neuropeptides control blood pressure, heart rate, sympathetic nerve activity and breathing with the aim of developing new drugs for the treatment of several diseases, including hypertension.
Ms Cornall is researching new treatments for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease for her PhD. She was a finalist in the 2014 Victorian Young Achievers Awards, BASF Science & Technology category.
