Wednesday 25 March 2015

You are invited to the annual Vice-Chancellor's Lecture delivered by Professor Ian Chubb AC, Chief Scientist for Australia.

Professor Chubb will discuss the importance of science and maths education at the lecture. The event follows Professor Chubb's National Press Club address on the same day.

Last year, Professor Chubb report entitled Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths: Australia's Future made a series of recommendations to improve Australia’s competitiveness, enhance education in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and maths), adopt a more strategic approach to research, and enhance Australia’s international engagement.

Professor Chubb will further these arguments this week, in a time of significant public discussion about the need to put science at the top of the national agenda.

The role of Australia’s Chief Scientist is to be a champion of science, and provide high-level independent advice to government on matters relating to science, technology and innovation, as well as to advocate for Australian science internationally.

Prior to his appointment in 2011as Chief Scientist, Professor Chubb was vice-chancellor of the Australian National University from 2001 to 2011, and Flinders University from 1995-2000. He was awarded an Order of Australia in 1999 and named ACT’s Australian of the Year in 2011 for his services to tertiary education and university governance.

Victoria University’s VC Lecture Series consists of annual addresses from prominent experts focusing on important topical issues in the 21st century.
