The Alan Kohler Interviews

This event has already taken place.

Wednesday 9 September 2015

Join us on 9 September at our Flinders Street campus for an evening with Alan Kohler, one of Australia's most experienced financial journalists and a VU Adjunct Professor.

In a conversation titled 'Digital disruption', Alan Kohler and Lewis Martin, Managing Director of Channel Seven Melbourne, will discuss the future of Australia’s media landscape and the impact of the internet on traditional free-to-air TV and other old media models.

The ever-changing media environment has been significantly impacted in recent times by shifts in the ways we consume content. Internet streaming is the biggest distractor for free-to-air and paid television. We can now access high-quality information and view video in a variety of digital channels and formats.

What do announcements such as the recent $2.5 billion AFL television rights deal – the biggest deal in Australian sporting history offering more live game broadcasts than ever before – mean for us in this changing environment? In mid-August, the NRL announced a similar deal with the Nine Network which is expected to be worth just short of the AFL's $2 billion figure once pay TV agreements are reached.

Yet, no longer are we tied to the TV for our sport fix. While billion-dollar deals are done for sport broadcasts on free-to-air networks, the digital future is already taking shape and, with it, a threat to these networks' supremacy.

The evening will be a fantastic learning and networking opportunity, where you can hear from industry leaders and network with VU business alumni and other professionals in the field.
