Free Chinese ink painting workshops

Come to one of our free Chinese ink painting workshops at the VU at Metrowest artspace. 

The workshops will be held under the guidance of artist, Dr Liu Xianghua (Eric), who is a visiting artist and academic.

About the workshops

During these exciting workshops participants will explore the basic concepts and techniques of Chinese ink painting. Dr Liu will explain the different characteristics and meanings in western and eastern art culture.

The workshops will explore the transformation from a physical shape and form into a reflection or creation of their individual expression. The classes will cover beginner level to advanced level practice for those who want to discover ink painting or further their skills.

Ink painting techniques that will be covered in the workshops will include:

  • controlling the ink line
  • composition
  • layering
  • rhythm
  • rhyme through model basis ink painting practice.

Still life ink painting workshop

Participants will practice still life ink painting and explore composition techniques.  This workshop is open to participants of all levels from beginner to advanced.

Portrait ink painting workshop

Learn how to transform the image of a figure into a creation which expresses personal style and taste. This workshop is aimed at participants with a more immediate to advanced level practice.

About the artist

Dr Liu studied at Central Academic of Fine Art in China and has developed a blend of Chinese traditional calligraphy and contemporary ink art which will be on exhibition at the VU at Metrowest artspace.

His abstract ink paintings try to explore the kinds of contemporary structure and materiality language on basis of multicultural traditions. He tries to expand the possibility of multicultural identity, which is based on culture more than on ethnicity.

Liu Xianghua was born in Hubei, China 1976. He received his doctoral degree in art and design from Central Academy of Fine Arts. Before coming to Melbourne as a visiting scholar in Faculty of the VCA and Music at The University of Melbourne, Liu Xianghua taught and researched the art of China’s traditional garden and national environmental art for ten years at Minzu University of China. In 2010, his installation Urban Forest, featured in the exhibition ‘History Reconstructed- China youth invitational exhibition" curated by Today Art Museum in Beijing.
