Student attendance and progress

Attending classes and making successful progress through your course are basic requirements for maintaining a student visa.

Attendance requirements - TAFE and ELICOS

If you are a TAFE or ELICOS student you are required to attend at least 80% of classes each semester (study period). If you are away for more than five consecutive days please contact your program coordinator immediately or request a Leave of Absence.

Victoria University monitors all student attendance and progress in line with Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) requirements, National Code 2007 and the University Procedure for Monitoring International Student Attendance.

Academic progress - Higher Education and TAFE

Higher education and TAFE students are expected to complete their course within the duration listed on their electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) . Student visas are issued for a period of time consistent with the normal full-time course duration. This means that you will need to achieve satisfactory academic progress (passing at least 50% of units attempted in a semester).

Victoria University will monitor your academic performance in accordance with the Student Progress and Assessment Policy.

Visa alert

Students who fail to attend 80% of their classes (TAFE and ELICOS); and/or fail to pass at least 50% of units attempted in a semester (higher education and TAFE) can risk having their eCoE cancelled and their student visa revoked.

Under the ESOS Act, the University is required to report international students to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) if they breach the conditions of their student visa.

Breaching attendance and progress requirements

If you have breached attendance and/or academic progress requirements, your course coordinator will attempt to contact you, either by phone or email. If you do not respond, a formal letter will be sent via registered mail to your address to request an interview.
In the interview you will need to:

  • provide reasons for your poor academic progress or not attending classes
  • negotiate a plan of action to achieve satisfactory attendance and academic progress

Visa alert

If you do not respond to the formal letter or fail to comply with the plan of action, Victoria University will then inform you of its intention to report information about the breach of your student visa to Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

You have 20 working days to appeal. If you do not access the appeals process, or the appeals finding is against you, the University will make its report to DIAC. You will then have 28 days to respond to the University's intention to report you to DIAC. This may result in the cancellation of your student visa.
