Put the spotlight on your performance career

Our Performance program offers project-based training and development for early career and established artists working in live performance.

Solo Residency Program

This program is for theatre, dance, music and performance artists to investigate their performance making process.

As a resident artist you will receive:

  • access to studio and theatre space at our Footscray Nicholson Campus
  • the support of other resident solo artists and industry mentors
  • opportunities to engage in group sessions eg: artist-led excursions and collaborative sessions

Selection criteria

Residents are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • strength and calibre of your previous and current practice
  • ability to clearly articulate the proposed use of your time in residence, including how the program aligns with this stage of your career
  • relationship of your proposal to the available resources
  • relationship to proposal of other applicants, with respect to group participation
  • availability and preparedness for the immersion experience in the June to October period

For information about the program, email perform@vu.edu.au with the subject 'Solo Residency'.

My Theatre Project

My Theatre Project is aimed at young performers, actors, directors or backstage people involved in theatre. It is also ideal if you have recently completed Year 12 drama, theatre studies or theatre arts.

You must choose an existing live performance project that you would like to be involved in. You will then be assigned a mentor to help you create a training plan.

The existing project can be:

  • a performance project with a local theatre company or youth theatre group
  • a university student theatre production or fringe festival show
  • something you have written or created and have been invited by an organisation to rehearse and perform

Your participation can include:

  • performing
  • creating digital images, video or text
  • using a video camera
  • designing the stage or lights
  • assisting the director
  • making the soundtrack or creating music
  • creating publicity material

After completing two projects, you can apply for a semester of international performance training at one of our partner performing arts academies.
