Secondary school students who want a trades or practical career, but also want to complete Year 12, can do both at Harvester Technical College in Sunshine.

Harvester is a partnership between Sunshine College and Victoria University, and is the first vocational senior secondary college in Melbourne’s west.

The Harvester VCAL Model

The Victorian Certificate of Applied learning (VCAL) at Harvester has three levels - Foundation, Intermediate or Senior. These are fully integrated into the specialist VET (vocational education and training) programs offered through the College. You take part in hands-on projects to help you build industry skills while developing your skills in literacy, numeracy and work readiness.

As a year 10 (Foundation) student, you enrol as a Sunshine College student and do a range of ‘taster’ programs in various trades.

In year 11 (Intermediate) and year 12 (Senior), you enrol as a Victoria University student, with all the benefits associated, undertaking specialty programs in your chosen field at various Victoria University campuses.

• Animal studies
• Building and construction (carpentry, bricklaying or flooring)
• Cabinet making/furnishing
• Creative industries (media, multimedia, games development)
• Electrotechnology
• Engineering (mechanical or fabrication - welding)

Anthony Gale is a carpentry student who came to Harvester halfway through 2010 while a Year 11 student at a different school. He is thriving.
“I already had friends at Harvester and thought it would be a good place to learn in a hands-on way.”

Besides being interested in developing leadership skills, Anthony was also interested in learning about the “green skills” taught at Harvester, which have become a big focus of the curriculum.
