The School of Social Sciences and Psychology brings together academic staff from a variety of discipline bases with teaching and research expertise. We provide an education and research training that reflects the demographic realities of the western region of Melbourne, and place these in a national and global framework.
Major areas of study include:
Our students learn skills in critical thinking and analysis, research reporting and presentation skills, cultural and social awareness and understanding. Our high quality instruction across all levels of education, from undergraduate to postgraduate study, involves learning in the workplace and strong community integration.
The School offers a welcoming, supportive and stimulating learning and social environment for all students. Mentoring programs for commencing students, and strategies or assisting students with study or writing problems are key priorities.
The School conducts teaching and research across a range of traditional social sciences discipline areas, as well as professional training in Social Work and practical experience in Psychology. Our staff are active researchers. They engage in many interdisciplinary topics of relevance to the western region of Melbourne, as well as contributing to their disciplines at national and international levels.
The Community, Identity and Displacement Research Network (CIDRN) is an initiative of the School of Social Sciences and Psychology where research activities are encouraged and promoted. This broad network aims to draw together and foster scholarly investigation of new diasporas and changing meanings of displacement and identity. It is an intellectual space where new questions about indigeneity, racism, refugees, sense of place, social inclusion, social justice, transnationalism and xenophobia can be raised, debated and discussed.
