Warehousing Skills course graduate
Workplace learning:St Vincent de Paul's
I came from Sierra Leone as a refugee in May 2008 with my wife and our six children. I needed to start work very quickly so I enrolled in VU’s seven-week Warehousing Skills course at Werribee.
Part of the course was a two-week work placement at St Vincent de Paul’s warehouse in Altona. I helped them sort donations. We got everything – furniture, clothing, books, and many toys. They wanted me to continue after I completed the course because they were pleased with the way I work.
I have met some very good people and improved my English. I now have a part-time job there that I really enjoy. Soon, I will get my forklift license and expand my skills.
The work placement was my first job in Australia. It has given me a good start and is the beginning of helping me to make a better life for my family.
My long-term plan is to become a nurse because I was involved in the health profession in my own country.
