"I spent a year working in industry at Tourism Victoria as an online marketing co-ordinator.
The role involved looking after online ads on Tourism Victoria’s consumer website, Visit Victoria. I was also the main port of call for enquiries relating to website advertising.
One of the benefits was that I got to liaise with a variety of tourism businesses across all areas of Victoria. It was an excellent opportunity to network within the industry.
The placement enabled me to build upon my knowledge of the tourism industry and gave me a wonderful insight into how the industry works together to market a destination, and the role that a state tourism organisation plays in the delivery of a successful destination.
My 14 months at Tourism Victoria strengthened my passion for the industry and reinforced my desire to work within it. It also clarified what direction I wanted to see my career take and provided real life opportunities which I was then able to relate into my course studies.
It also played an important role in securing my current job as senior marketing co-ordinator at Destination Melbourne, as I was recommended for this role by a colleague at Tourism Victoria.
Being passionate about your field is always a strong starting point.
If you are unsure as to what area of your chosen field you would like to work in, I would recommend volunteering at various organisations.
You never know where it may lead and it puts you in great stead when applying for jobs in your placement year."
