Winning formula
Karolina Domonji pursued her honours research in the workplace thanks to VU's industry connections.
"After studying a TAFE hospitality course at VU, I began working in the food industry. This was where I developed my interest in food innovation.
I decided to further my skills with a degree in Nutrition, Food and Health Science and was offered a placement in VU’s honours program. VU’s connections with industry gave me the opportunity to carry out my honours research in the workplace.
As part of my studies, I worked for local seafood manufacturer Austrimi, redeveloping the formula for a calamari product. As a direct result of my work, the product now has a superior quality and will increase the company’s profit margin.
My learning in the workplace allowed me to gain knowledge and experience that you don’t get from sitting in a classroom.
I’m now a Quality Assurance and Research Officer working in the industry. I wouldn’t be employed where I am today without that experience."
