Workpalce learning: Engineers Without Borders

"I like the idea of physically seeing the impact of my work and civil engineering seemed like the perfect career choice. I’ve always known I wanted to help people, so water and sanitation became my areas of focus. On my self-funded trip to the Philippines working for Engineers Without Borders, I realised what a huge role engineers play in helping developing countries.

For four weeks I built houses and installed septic pits in a remote village north of Manilla called Libmanan.

The experience taught me a lot about sustainable development and appropriate technologies. It’s not the same as building a house here in Australia. Some villages didn’t even have clean water and you could literally walk across rivers due to the amount of garbage in them.

I’d love to assist regions in the Pacific with sanitation, so after I graduate I’m planning on becoming an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development."
