Rebecca Mulgrew
Bachelor of Arts (Sports Administration)
Workplace learning: Cricket Australia
Victoria University was paramount to setting me on the road to a successful career. Unlike many other universities at the time I enrolled, VU had mandatory work placement as part of its Sports Administration degree, and this practical experience was the reason I was employed by Cricket Australia (CA) when I finished my course.
In the last year of my degree, I had a university practicum position at CA, and VU gave us time to work at least two days a week with our employers. Having the two days per week at CA allowed me to demonstrate my abilities and I was provided with a number of projects to independently work on.
Once I finished my course, I was offered a full-time position in the Game Development Department of CA.
I would highly recommend to any student to take full advantage of the opportunity to undertake work placement – particularly in the sports and recreation industry – because there are limited jobs and many people are vying for them. Any advantage you can gain in gaining employment should be taken.
Also, wherever possible, undertake work placement at the organisation or company you would most like to work at when you finish your course.
