Certificate IV and Diploma in Music (Music Performance)
Workplace learning: Royal Melbourne Show

As soon as I went to the audition at VU I knew it was what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a singer and I knew the course would help me get there.

One of our subjects was touring, and we had to organise a couple of gigs outside of uni. They wanted to see us organising ourselves.

I got in touch with the events at the Royal Melbourne Show and they were interested. I organised two-hour slots for 10 nights. I got together all the bands at uni and gave them their timetable and all the information they needed about getting show passes, carpark places and stage plans. The next year the Royal Melbourne Show continued with the event, and the events people hired me to perform where I did eight shows.

I had a cover band with guys in the course and I also put together my own original music.

I liked how the course was structured. We did a bit of everything, songwriting, theory, computers, music for film, recording. It was diverse and I really liked the teachers, and I liked the facilities as well. You make out of it what you can. You have to. You push yourself because no one’s going to push you.

I’m now running a couple of cover bands and I’m a freelance singer. I do a lot of corporate events, weddings, cafes, gigs at Crown. Other musicians call me up to fill in. I’ve done the Best and Fairest Ball at the AFL. I did a gig at school for the Bulldogs and it flowed from that.
