(Bachelor of Arts – Event Management; Bachelor of Business – Administration).
The ‘Victorian Business Icon’ award winner credits VU for paving the way to her career in politics.
My older brother was the first in our family to go to university and he chose VU. Wanting to continue the family tradition, and being familiar with the great facilities on campus, I decided to do my degree at VU (Bachelor of Arts – Event Management; Bachelor of Business – Administration).
During my studies, I did work placements to try to gain as much real-life experience as possible. I was also active in the community with sporting and fundraising activities.
In 2008 I created history as the first person in Hobsons Bay Council to win selection as a Councillor on primary votes. I was elected to Local Government for the municipality of Hobsons Bay.
Along with being a Councillor, I also hold down a full time job as the Industrial, Campaigns and Women's officer for the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, which I find challenging, yet exciting.
I was awarded the Victorian Business Icon Award last year (2009), beating over 400 of the sharpest young minds in the state.
At VU I was regularly challenged to go the ‘extra mile’. Lecturers instilled in us the belief that we could be part of something greater than ourselves. This inspired me to always put in 100%.
