Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education
Workplace learning: Department of Foundation, Community and Indigenous Programs
"I realised that teaching was my calling after helping out at my children’s school literacy program. The teacher of the program suggested I look at further education as I had a natural knack for teaching.
The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education at Victoria University was the right choice as the course comprised of a large amount of practical work, which I think far outweighs theoretical work.
I enrolled in the Women’s Program because the course has a strong emphasis on mentoring and support for students, and I could relate to the students in the program. Class consisted of women from various cultural and non-English backgrounds who wanted to improve their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The Project Partnership consisted of 10 one-hour sessions where I worked with a different student each week. The one-on-one format was fantastic as I got to work with different levels of education, and cater my teaching to suit each student. I also assisted with class activities including an audio activity and a cooking class.
Through the Project Partnership I have been able to use the theoretical skills and knowledge and apply it practically.
Future employers know that VU students come from a well-developed background of practical, on-the-job work experience as opposed to a heavily-focused course on theory. I am confident that I am ready to step into a role with the skills I currently have.
Teaching is so rewarding and I have had such a great experience because all the students were hungry to learn. I hope to find employment as a sessional teacher and to work in different areas of ESL programs upon graduation."
