Adrian Bates
Bachelor of Business (Accounting/Banking and Finance)
Workplace learning: BSA Partnership Pty Ltd
"After attending VU’s Open Day, I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Business with a double major in accounting, and banking and finance. The option to study a joint degree helped me figure out where my interests and strengths lay.
The Learning in the Workplace and Community (LiWC) program offered at the University was the push I needed to further my knowledge and skills and get my foot into the professional world.
In my second year, I met my current employer, BSA Partnership, at the VU Careers Expo. BSA Partnership is an accounting and consulting firm in Melbourne’s CBD. I did my workplace learning with them and they later offered me a part-time job while I continued my studies. Eight years later I am now a senior accountant with the same firm.
The LiWC program is a great way to experience work life while combining part-time study. I was able to apply the skills I learnt during my course to my role at BSA Partnership where I worked on clients’ files and prepared individual income tax returns.
For Business students, LiWC takes up the entire third year of study. I highly recommend to any Business student to take full advantage of the opportunity to participate in LiWC. It allows you to work for a year in your chosen field and experience work life while combining part-time study.
I have just completed my Chartered Accountant course and have been admitted as a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Thanks to VU, I have a secure future."
