Workplace learning: Glendale Nursing Home

"I’m originally from Eritrea and always dreamed of becoming a nurse and caring for older people. I come from a culture where older people are highly respected.

I gained a lot of experience during my work placement in an Aged Care facility during my Certificate III in Aged Care at VU.

I worked at Glendale Nursing Home in Werribee for six weeks – three days a week from 7am to 3pm. It was really interesting. I was doing real work, and it was useful for my classroom studies. When you do something in real life it’s totally different to studying it. I learned to do things practically and I learned a lot.

I completed the Certificate III in Aged Care work and the Certificate III in Home and Community Care at VU in 2010. I’m now studying community service and health administration.

With the help of supportive and helpful teachers, Victoria University has given me the chance to fulfil a bright future. It is never too late to go after your dream."
