Career and study decisions
You can do a lot to help a young person make career and study decisions. Talk to your son or daughter about:
- their interests, strengths, likes and dislikes
- what they have learnt from work experience or part-time work
- their hopes and visions for the future.
Use our website to explore courses that align with your child's interests and strengths.
Adjusting to university life
Going from secondary school to tertiary study is a big step. We recognise this and provide support for all new students. You can help your child through this time by encouraging them to attend orientation sessions and social and sporting events. These show your son or daughter university life, and give them a chance to meet other students and make new friends. For an indication on what life is like at Victoria University browse the student life page.
If your child is moving to Australia to study, please see international students on our website for information on arriving, living, studying and working in Melbourne.
Studying in 2012
There is a lot of information your son or daughter will need to know. We have prepared a survival guide listing important academic dates, links to support services, and phone number that all VU students should know about.

Fees, loans and scholarships
When your son or daughter is accepted into a course they will be asked to attend an enrolment session. The enrolment fees and charges vary depending on the type of course your child is going to study.
Vocational education (TAFE) course fees vary depending on the number of course contact hours. If your son or daughter enrols in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in a degree, they pay a contribution towards the cost of their education. Some full-fee places are also available.
Other costs include books and equipment, accommodation and general living expenses.
Find out if your son or daughter is eligible for assistance with the cost of their education. Student loans and scholarships are available, and advisers in our financial services area can assist.
Facilities and services
We have facilities and services to support learning and help young people get the most out of their university life. Free advice and counselling, housing services, and student equity and disability support services are available.
We provide employment services to help students plan their career, prepare for work and find a job. Sports and fitness centres and other facilities are available for all students to enjoy.
