This one day Victoria University/Australian National University interdisciplinary event focuses on documentary film, history and colonialism.
Plaudits at the time of its release in 1958 described New Guinea Patrol as the film 'had been crying out to be made in Papua and New Guinea'.
It retains a singular historical place as a visual record of the work of the Australian administration, the experience of the patrol and of first and early-contact encounters. It was filmmaker Maslyn Williams' most successful New Guinea film.
The story of its production illuminates relations between colonial histories and the documentary form.
This symposium looks back on this patrol and its documentary record, with papers on patrolling in the highlands, and on Maslyn Williams, as publicist for government policy, auteur, and cross-cultural communicator.
This is a free event sponsored by Victoria University to be held at the Australian National University in Canberra.
