Our equity objective is to ensure that people from all groups in society have the chance to participate successfully in activities at the university, whether they be people with disabilities, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people from lower socio-economic and rural backgrounds.
Examples of diversity that we acknowledge, recognise and embrace are age, cultural background, disability, ethnicity, family responsibilities, gender, language, religious belief and sexual orientation.
We have inclusive teaching and staffing practices that promote the spirit of equal opportunity legislation and practice, based on international human rights conventions.
VU recognises that different student groups have different educational needs and this has to be reflected in our policies, procedures and practices, which is why we undertook a study to examine the diversity of our student population. The report, The Diversity and Performance of the Student Population, examines aspects of the life and work of VU students and its impact on their learning at VU over the period 2003-07.
