Professor Harman is the Vice-Chancellor and President of Victoria University, Australia. She has led the university since 2003 towards a future that aims to make VU a distinctive multi-sector institution internationally and in the western region of Melbourne. VU has a strong commitment to students, employers and the communities that it serves.
Professor Harman was educated in New Zealand and Canada, has worked extensively in the private sector, held several executive leadership roles in higher education institutions, and also has professional expertise in politics and public policy. She has served on a wide variety of State, national and international boards including Universities Australia, Australian Learning and Teaching Council, Business-Higher Education Roundtable and the World Association for Co-operative Education.
Professor Harman has presented and published on industry policy, minerals and energy, trade, public sector reform, government accountability and Australian competition policy. She regularly presents keynote addresses and publishes on a range of education topics, including university engagement with community and industry, globalisation and education, quality, leadership, access and equity, and workplace and service learning.
