Associate Professor, Socially Inclusive Education

Katie Hughes plays a leading role in developing and implementing the University’s Social Inclusion and Equity Plan specifically as it relates to:

  • improving the access, participation and success of students from low socio-economic backgrounds
  • students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent
  • young people aged 15-24 in VET
  • students from low SES and non-English speaking (NESB) backgrounds.

To this end, she has oversight of school and community engagement and selection, pathways and progress as they relate to the participation and success of students from these backgrounds.

Her disciplinary background is within Social Sciences and Gender Studies, in particular. She has published in the area of social justice and education, and is currently engaged in research on the ways in which universities productively engage with first-in-family students to enhance their first year at university and overcome the transition from high school.

Her most recent book is Australian Sociology. A Changing Society 3, with D. Holmes and R. Julian (Pearson Education, 2011).
