Research Interests

Joanne's main research interests are around women's policy, equity in employment and education, diversity management and wellbeing research. A particular focus has been on looking at women's under-representation in non-traditional employment and training. Joanne's PhD research extends this interest with a focus on women in higher education and why women continue to be under-represented in senior academic roles. She has extensive experience in undertaking contracted research for State and Commonwealth governments on current policy issues including work on addressing skill shortages through labour market programs, settlement issues for refugees and humanitarian entrants to Australia, diversity management in Australian organisations and the development of community indicators for local government planning.

Publications, Reports and Conferences

Joanne's book, Productive Diversity in Australia: how and why companies make the most of diversity, has recently been published by VDM Verlag Dr. Muller. This publication is an outcome of Joanne's Masters research and is based on interviews with senior managers from 156 of the top 500 companies listed with the ASX. The book explores the various meanings applied to 'productive diversity' since its launch as Commonwealth policy in 1992 and explores why the concept has not been widely adopted as a model of work organisation.

Joanne has produced a range of publications and reports arising from the various projects that she has undertaken. Most recently, and in collaboration with project partners, Joanne has completed the final reports for the Victorian Community Indicators Project and an evaluation of a State Government labour market program, Regional Jobs Package, aimed at addressing skill shortages in regional Victoria. Joanne has also published in academic journals and is the author of Women in Building: The Missing 51% published by the AGPS.

Community Engagement

Joanne applies ICEPA's community engagement principles to all aspects of her work through entering into genuine partnerships and collaborations with organisations and people involved with the research. Joanne is a member of the Equity Research Centre (ERC) and the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE).
