Don't Go There: Safety, Community and Racism for Young Sudanese and Pacific Islanders in Melbourne's West

Michele Grossman (Communication, Culture and Languages)  has been running a year-long collaborative research project with Victoria Police in Brimbank focusing on young people's perspectives on community safety and youth policing.  The project as a whole surveys and interviews more than 500 young people in the region on issues related to the research focus of the study.  There is a special focus on young people from Sudanese and Pacific Islander backgrounds, and this seminar will focus on some of the preliminary issues that have emerged from focus groups and consultations run with young people in these two communities.

Speaker

Associate Professor Michele Grossman is Associate Dean (Research and Research Training) in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development.  She is an experienced cross-cultural researcher whose work over the past three years has explored aspects of the refugee settlement experience in Australia with a particular interest in, and links to, the South Sudanese community.  She has conducted funded research projects in this area through ICEPA and VU's Wellness Promotion Unit.
