Social Inclusion and Exclusion of Culturally Diverse Communities: Strategies and Experiences

The Institute for Community, Ethnicity and Policy Alternatives (ICEPA) at Victoria University in partnership with the University of Tasmania presented the 'Social Inclusion and Exclusion of Culturally Diverse Communities: Strategies and Experiences' conference on Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd August 2008 at the Launceston Campus of the University of Tasmania.

The conference brought together migrant and refugee communities, service providers, State and Federal Government agencies, community groups, education providers, employers, unions, and academics to identify:

  • The reasons for and nature of social exclusion of migrant and refugee communities
  • Policies and practices that lead to the social inclusion of migrant and refugee communities.

The conference was based around five themes:

  1. Employment, education and training
  2. Housing
  3. Social health and wellbeing for both migrant/refugee and host communities
  4. Family and relationship sustainability
  5. Racism and law enforcement.

The conference drew on national and international experiences, including benchmarks of inclusive societies, with a particular interest in the Tasmanian experience.
