Associate Professor Michael Hamel-Green

Michael has undertaken a number of leadership roles since coming to Victoria University's predecessor Western Institute in 1989 after previous positions in the education sector, including secondary teacher, educational research, officer, and community development teacher at Kangan TAFE.
His positions at Victoria University have included: initiator and coordinator of degree level community development courses, coordinator of the postgraduate Public Advocacy program, Head of the School of Social Sciences, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development. He was the inaugural Chair of the University's Education and Research Board during 2006, and its Deputy Chair during 2007.
Michael has a background in political science and peace studies. His research interests include regional arms control and security, and the role of the UN in disarmament and arms control. His most recent publications include a monograph on regional denuclearisation initiatives for the United Nations Institute of Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), and a comparative study of Australian and Japanese approaches to arms control.
He was appointed as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development in early 2008. The Faculty of 214 staff and 5,400 students covers a range of disciplinary and cross-disciplinary areas, including undergraduate and postgraduate teacher training courses, general arts degrees, psychology, social work and community development courses, communications and creative arts courses, indigenous studies, and sports and exercise science programs.
