Note that the Student Housing Services does not find accommodation for you. Students must take responsibility for finding and booking their own accommodation. International students need to book their own temporary accommodation before arriving in Melbourne.
Organising accommodation in Melbourne
Step 1: Ask if you can stay with friends or family upon arrival in Melbourne. This will allow you to decide on the most suitable living arrangements.
Step 2: Use the internet to view temporary accommodation options available in Melbourne
Longer term accommodation:

- Look for apartments advertised on the Student Housing Service housing database
Shorter term accommodation:
- Hostels
- Homestay
- Hotels and motels
Step 3: If you decide to stay in the student village or Sunbury Hall, you will need to sign a contract on arrival in Melbourne.
Step 4: If you decide to rent an apartment, search on the Victoria University Student Housing Service housing database for vacancies. These share-housing vacancies are for current Victoria University/TAFE students only. Students please email housing@vu.edu.au if you are unhappy with any vacancy listed.
Step 5: If you cannot find a suitable apartment on the housing database, search real estate agents for vacant un/furnished flats/ apartments/ houses. Try www.realestate.com.au
Step 6: Use the
Shared Housing Guide (1000KB)
to assist you with property selection. It is a good idea to visit a number of properties before agreeing to sign a lease.
Step 7: Seek free and confidential advice from the VU Student Housing Officer on 9688 4420 or email housing@vu.edu.au about your bond, condition report, lease, content insurance, repairs, rent and co-tenant problems, cheap furniture, food and storage.
Step 8: View renting rights and duties information. See tenancy, legal advice and discrimination.
