COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Diploma of Community Development   (CHC51402)

Develops the skills and knowledge required for Community Development work in a broad range of services, contributing to the development of community capacity through community consultation, public education and advocacy.

On successful completion of the course, you will be qualified to work in community engagement, community development work and community projects, both government and non-government.

Applicants must demonstrate paid and/or voluntary experience in community related work, and be able to undertake study at Diploma level and/or have year 12 or equivalent.

The course is two years full time, or part time equivalent.

The course is based at Footscray Nicholson Campus.

The course covers:

  • Undertake systems advocacy 
  • Develop and implement community programs, community development strategies, effective communication techniques, policy
  • Develop community resources, effective working relations, new networks
  • Support community action, leadership
  • Respond holistically to client issues
  • Meet statutory and organisational information requirements
  • Undertake and manage research activities

In addition, you will be required to choose electives units relating to specific client groups including children, young and old people, people with disabilities and from diverse cultural backgrounds as well as critical incidents/issues such as intoxication, mental health and domestic violence.

Entry is based on the Supplementary Application Form, Professional Reference Form, your current resume, a group interview and a brief written task.

Agencies may require a police clearance prior to undertaking a placement in the sector.
