Transport Driver Training
Industry Skills Training provides driver training in the following:
- Light Rigid
- Medium Rigid
- Heavy Rigid (Synchromesh) and Heavy Rigid (Non-syncromesh)
- Heavy Combination
- Multi-Combination (B-Double).
AM I ELIGIBLE?
See prerequisites below for each Heavy Vehicle category.
If you have defective eyesight or hearing, suffer from giddiness, blackouts, epilepsy, diabetes, psychiatric illness or other physical disability which may affect your driving, you will need to obtain written approval from VicRoads prior to booking into a course.
PLEASE NOTE
You must:
- provide documentary evidence of identity and proof of age:
- - primary identification i.e. photo driver's licence, boat or shooter's licence, passport or naturalisation papers
- - a secondary form of ID e.g. Medicare Card, Key Card, birth certificate extract
- attend all scheduled training sessions at all scheduled times
- bring a copy of the latest Victorian Bus and Truck Driver's Handbook
- provide own writing materials including blue/black pen and paper.
LIGHT RIGID VEHICLES (LR)
Unit of Competency TDTC297B Drive Light Rigid Vehicles
(from Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) TDT20202)
Entitles endorsed licensee to drive any vehicles, including truck and bus, greater than 4.5 tonne GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) but equal to or less than 8 tonne GVM, or seating more than 12 adults including the driver and greater than 4 tonne GVM.
PREREQUISITES
- Must have held a driver's licence for at least 12 months
- Licence must be endorsed for manual transmissions
- Recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.
HOW LONG'S THE COURSE?
Full-time: 8am - 4pm, three days.
Part-time: 5:30 - 9:30pm (one or two nights per week).
WHAT DOES IT COST?
$511.20 per person (includes Tuition and Materials Fees).
MEDIUM RIGID VEHICLES (MR)
Unit of Competency: TDTC397B Drive Medium Rigid Vehicles
(from Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) TDT20202)
Entitles endorsed licensee to drive any 2 axle rigid vehicle, including truck and bus, greater than 8 tonne (GVM).
PREREQUISITES
- Must have held a driver's licence for at least 12 months
- Licence must be endorsed for manual transmissions
- Recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.
HOW LONG'S THE COURSE?
Full-time: 8am - 4pm, five days.
Part-time: 5:30 - 9:30pm (one or two nights per week).
WHAT DOES IT COST?
$518.20 per person (includes Tuition and Materials Fees).
HEAVY RIGID VEHICLES (HR)
Unit of Competency TDTC497C Drive Heavy Rigid Vehicles
(from Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) TDT30202)
Entitles endorsed licensee to drive any rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles, including truck and bus greater than 8 tonne (GVM).
Driver training is offered on a choice of 2 gear boxes:
a) 6 speed syncromesh gear box
- does not require double clutching through the gear changes
- recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.
b) 13 speed non-syncromesh gear box
- requires double clutching through the gear range (up and down shifting)
- best suited to drivers with extensive experience of driving manual vehicles.
Please Note: if you enrol for a Heavy Rigid course and find you are unable to master the larger vehicle, you will not be granted a refund and cannot be guaranteed any option other than re-enrolment in a course for a smaller vehicle (LR or MR) when a place becomes available.

- Licence must be endorsed for manual transmissions
- Recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.

HEAVY COMBINATION VEHICLES (HC)
Unit of Competency TDTC597C Drive Heavy Combination Vehicles
(from Certificate III in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) TDT30202)
Entitles endorsed licensee to drive prime mover/single semi, or HR plus trailer greater than 9 tonnes gross vehicle mass (GVM).
PREREQUISITE
- Must have held a driver's licence for at least 24 months including 12 months as the holder of an MR or HR licence
- Recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.
HOW LONG'S THE COURSE?
Full-time: 8am - 4pm, five days.
Part-time: 5:30 - 9:30pm (one or two nights per week).
WHAT DOES IT COST?
$633.20 per person (includes Tuition and Materials Fees).
MULTI-COMBINATION (B-DOUBLE) VEHICLES (MC)
Unit of Competency TDTC697B Drive Multi-Combination Vehicles
(from Certificate IV in Transport and Distribution (Road Transport) TDT40202)
Provides driver training for Prime Mover with more than one trailer and includes VicRoads licence assessment.
PREREQUISITE
- Must have held a Heavy Combination Licence and had HC driver experience for at least 1 year
- Recent experience in driving a manual transmission vehicle.
