The aim of the School of Nursing and Midwifery is to prepare educated health practitioners who, in collaboration with other health professionals, will deliver holistic care to individuals in our multicultural society.

Undergraduate studies, including the new nursing curriculum starting in 2009, prepare students for registration as Registered Nurses (Division 1), and provide the opportunity for registered nurses and midwives to upgrade their certificate or diploma to a degree.

It is believed that nursing and midwifery in the future will be increasingly delivered in a variety of contexts, therefore the School concentrates on the preparation of broadly educated individuals who will be prepared for professional nursing and midwifery practice in the twenty-first century.

The School's educational programs combine:

  1. the acquisition of knowledge and skills for a variety of health settings;
  2. the development of an awareness of the issues that affect health care in the community; and
  3. an understanding of the significant part nurses and midwives play in the preparation of health practices.

 THE FLEXIBLE CLINICAL MODEL

The School of Nursing and Midwifery is currently trialling an innovative program, the Flexible Clinical Model, which allows students to partially set their own shifts for clinical placements. It will enable students to work alongside expert clinicians while at the same time offer opportunities to exposure students to the experiences of weekends and after hours.

The traditionally used block method does not allow students to experience the nature and challenges of nursing during a night shift and over the weekend. We believe that this flexible model will provide students with a positive clinical learning environment that maximises the achievement of student learning outcomes and capitalises on the expertise of both clinicians and faculty.

The primary aim of the Flexible Clinical Model (FCM) are to enhance clinical experience for students. This is another way the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Victoria University is providing improved nursing education, and nurses more job-ready and better prepared for life in their career.
