Areas of expertise Heat and mass transfer in porous media
Postharvest technology of fresh and durable produce

Research Interests My principal research interest is applying the
methods of engineering science to practical
problems in postharvest technology. Current
projects include:

Recircaeration

Cereal grains such as wheat and barley must be
stored free from insect pests and in good condition.
One way of achieving this is to cool grains using
ambient or refrigerated air.  A new alternative is
recircaeration in which air leaving a bulk of grains
is re-admitted to the grain and in this way the grain
can be colled by a further 4C.

This seemingly small reduction in temperature can
have a profoundly beneficial effect on preventing
insect pests from developing.

Hydrocooling

Research is being carried out on advanced methods
of designing cooling systems for horticultural produce.
The work makes use of engineering science developed
in the areas of chemical engineering and computational
fluid dynamics.
