The School operates a range of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for teaching professional engineering courses and support research activities.

Computer laboratories

The schools computer laboratory precinct comprises 4 individual laboratories equipped with a total of 115 Pentium computers along with a number of peripherals for printing and data projection.  The School holds licenses for a wide range of generic software as well as specialist engineering software to support activities in learning and research:

Materials, Geomechanics and Surveying Laboratory

Dynamic Mechanical Analyser (-70 C to 500 C).

  • Tri-axial soil testing machine.
  • Flexible wall soil permeameter.

 

Mechanics Laboratory

The recently refurbished Mechanics Laboratory precinct includes the Undergraduate Statics Laboratory which supports activities in Solid Mechanics and Stress Analysis, and the Undergraduate Dynamics Laboratory which support activities in Mechanics of Machines, Mechanical Vibration, Signal Measurement and Analysis, and Modal Analysis.  The sate-of-the-art Mechanics Research Laboratory supports the research activities of both staff and post-graduate research students and is equipped with a wide range of experimental facilities such as:

 

  • 50 kN Instron 8501 computer controlled dynamic universal testing machine & vibration table
  • 20 kN, 100 KN and 300 kN universal testing machines with computer interface.
  • 2000 kN compression testing machine.
  • Data Physics DP550 Vibration controller
  • Electromagnetic vibration shakers - 2000N, 400 N and 100N.
  • Lansmont Electro-hydraulic vibration table - 10 g / 1000 kG
  • Lansmont programmable Shock generator 600 g.
  • Bruel & Kjaer 2032 Real-time signal analyser
  • Data Physics DP430 Real-time signal analyser
  • B&K 2032 real-time signal analyser
  • SRS 785 real-time signal analyser
  • 4 channel high-capacity programmable data recorder (50 kHz)

  • 120 channel Hewlett-Packard data logger.
  • Non-contact temperature sensor.
  • Wide range of sensors and amplifiers for the measurement of acceleration, velocity, displacement, force, temperature and pressure.

 

The Mechanics Research laboratory also operates a specialist Cable Mechanical Testing Laboratory on behalf of Olex cables.  This laboratory is capable of evaluating the short-term and long-term (creep) and thermal elongation characteristics of cables under controlled environments.

 

Workshops

The School's workshops contain a wide range of machinning and manufacturing equipment for producing
